Work Continues on the Prairie

The Board has continued to develop our park improvements in the three years since the grand opening of the Oasis and prairie.

The Oasis garden features tulips in spring, perennials all season long, and dwarf junipers through the winter. We’re delighted to see people sitting in the Oasis, reading or chatting with friends.

This past year we have focused on developing the prairie. At the Oasis grand opening, volunteers cut about 15 beds, digging out the roots of the grasses and invasive weeds. Then we planted hundreds of native plants.  We had hoped the Parks Division would burn the no-mow area so we would have space to expand those beds, but they didn’t have the resources to do that. Instead, volunteers have enlarged the beds and created walkways joining them. All of that was done by hand.

We finally have about half the original beds connected into one large area. There will be an entrance with a Native Gardens sign created by Dane County. Neighbors will now have a clearly designated entry into the prairie and will be able to see all the prairie flowers from other points in the Park.
