There are over 10 acres of prairie within the Junction Ridge Neighborhood limits, including two lovely ponds. We encourage you to visit them all.
The mini-prairie, just a short walk from the Oasis, is part of JRNA’s large-scale plan to make the park more beautiful and "user-friendly." The Oasis is surrounded by perennial gardens of mostly native plants. The prairie will be a natural area of native plants that will support pollinators and other animals.
The prairie was inaugurated during the Grand Opening of the Oasis in October, 2021. At that time, volunteers cleared and planted a series of 6-foot circles within the “no-mow” area. Over the past two years, we have cleared the areas between the circles and added more plants. This year alone, we added over 200 plants provided by Dane County and private gardeners.
Environmental Initiatives is one of JRNA's priorities. As the prairie develops, we intend to offer a series of programs on the importance of prairie, pollinators, birds and mammals that live in prairie habitat, etc. Groups will meet at the Oasis for an overview and refreshments and then tour the prairie.
